Tigre de Cristal officially opened in Russia (2015/11/23)

The first in a wave of casinos set to turn Russia’s Primorye region into a key gambling destination opened on Wednesday a month after its soft launch. An invitation-only ceremony held by owner G1 Entertainment and its parent company Melco International marked the official launch followed by an after party for the general public.

Tigre de Cristal is well-situated to attract VIP gamblers from northern China, which contains a large percentage of the Chinese population. Tigre de Cristal is one of at least eight casinos planned for the Primorsky Krai gaming region. The zone aims to increase tourism from the east, rather than Europe, and has been promoted to rival the likes of Las Vegas and Macau.

Tigre de Cristal is opening in two phases with a total investment of US$1bn. The first phase opened this week with a 119-room hotel and 24hr-hour casino featuring 800 slot machines from suppliers such as Novomatic and IGT, as well as 15 baccarat tables, 25 other table games and 25 VIP gaming tables. It also houses a nightclub and several restaurants.

Russian media is reporting that all the rooms are already booked until the end of this year and so visitors will have to wait until 2016 before they can stay at the facility. The lack of hotel space, however, will be eased in the second phase that will open two hotels with additional gaming space for another 500 slot machines, 100 VIP tables and 70 mass tables.

Officials of partner companies behind the project attended this week’s grand opening including VIP guests of G1 Entertainment CEO Craig Ballantyne, Summit Ascent Holdings, and Melco CEO Lawrence Ho. Speaking at the ceremony, Ballantyne expressed confidence the project will attract investments in all areas of tourism in the Far East of Russia.
